For over two decades, Hanwei Practical Katana still dominates the sword market as the go-to entry level katana. Since the beginning the Practicals allowed the aspiring practitioner to own a differentially tempered blade at an economically practical price to start tameshigiri.

From the Practical Series several katana designs emerged but the demand for more martial arts and cutting katana centric designs grew. From this growing market demand the Performance Series katana evolved from the Practical designs birthed the XL Katana, XL Light Katana and Elite and later the Iaito series of katana.
